Dr. Ludwik Sobolewski

Ludwik Sobolewski is a lawyer by education. He developed his professional career mainly in the area of capital markets. In that domain he has been manager of most important institutions, including being President and CEO of the Warsaw Stock Exchange since 2006 till 2013.


He graduated from the the Law and Administration Faculty of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, in 1989. He has also passed  doctoral studies at the Panthéon – Assas University (Paris II). He holds the title of Doctor of Law; he is also legal advisor and member of the Bar of Legal Advisors; he also passed an exam qualifying for the judge profession. In 2006-2010 he was the President of the Association of Polish Lawyers. He started his professional career at the Law and Administration Faculty of the Jagiellonian University, as a lecturer and assistant at the Chair of Legal History.Between 1992 and 1993, he was Advisor to the Minister - Head of the Office of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Poland and until October 1993, he served as Director of the Office’s Organizational Department. He was charged, among others, with a project of the reform of the central governmental administration.

From May till October 1994, he was Advisor to the Management Board of the Warsaw Stock Exchange and Head of the Group for the spin-off of the National Depository for Securities (Krajowy Depozyt Papierów Wartościowych) from the Warsaw Stock Exchange. 

After successful foundation of the central securities depositories, he held the position of Executive Vice President of the Management Board of the National Depository for Securities, one of the most important institutions of the capital market infrastructure, from 1994 until June 2006.

From June 28, 2006 Ludwik Sobolewski has served as President of the Management Board and CEO of the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE), until February 2012 when he ended his mission at the WSE. At that time, the WSE became listed company, after a spectacular IPO carried out in 2010, and built a network of international relations and market segments within the WSE, which in combination with other factors resulted in a leading position of the Warsaw Stock Exchange among capital markets of Central and Eastern Europe region. 

Ludwik Sobolewski has also profound experience and competences in corporate governance and gained while executing corporate supervision  over companies. He was for many years the member or member and  chairman of supervisory boards of several leading and important companies, such as National Depositories for Securities (at the time when he was CEO of the Warsaw Stock Exchange), of Polish Powers Exchange SA, BondSpot SA and Exchange Centre SA. 

He performed the function of the member of National Board for Research and Development (public institution); he also sits at the Board of “Poland Now” Foundation. 

Ludwik Sobolewski is also well known as author of numerous books and articles on regulatory and other issues concerning domestic and international capital markets.
